Kunya Urgench
Köhne Ürgenç — A medieval historical site located on the banks of the Ceyhun River in northeastern Turkmenistan. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
Kehne Ürgenç was first the capital of Khwarazm in the Achaemenid Empire and later the capital of the Khwarazm Empire. It was destroyed by the Mongols and then rebuilt. When the population moved to the new settlement in 1646, it became known as "Old Ürgenç." The site contains the ruins of mosques, minarets, mausoleums, and palaces dating from the 11th to 16th centuries. The tombs of prominent figures such as Necmeddin Kübra, Sultan Tekiş, İl Arslan, and Türebeg Hanım are located here. Its architectural influence extends to Iran, Afghanistan, and India. Köhne Ürgenç is an iconic heritage site of Turkmen history and culture.
