Ertugrul Gazi Mosque

The Ertuğrul Gazi Mosque is a magnificent mosque located in Ashgabat, named after Ertuğrul Gazi, the father of Osman I (founder of the Ottoman Empire). Opened in 1998, it is one of the city's symbolic structures, known for its four minarets and central dome. Built with white marble, the mosque stands out with its intricate stained-glass windows and luxurious details in its interior decoration. It has the capacity to host 5,000 worshippers simultaneously. Construction, which began in 1993 under the name "Ashgabat Turkey Mosque," was marred by construction accidents. Although Turkmen officials suggested naming it after Süleyman Demirel, it was ultimately named after Ertuğrul Gazi, a common ancestor of the Turkish and Turkmen peoples. The architecture of the structure resembles the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Mosque) in Istanbul, and it is one of the first major mosques built in Turkmenistan following its independence.
