Kalan Minaret

The Kalan Minaret is the centerpiece of the Po-i-Kalyan complex in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Built in 1127 by Arslan Khan of the Karakhanid dynasty, it stands 45.6 meters tall. Known as the “Great Minaret,” it has dominated Bukhara’s skyline for over 900 years. Its base diameter is 9 meters, tapering to 6 meters at the top. Originally built to call Muslims to prayer, it also earned the nickname “Tower of Death” due to its use in executions. The brick structure is adorned with intricate geometric patterns. In 1993, it was inscribed as part of the Historic Centre of Bukhara on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
