Gur-e Amir Mausoleum
The Gur-e Amir Mausoleum in Samarkand is the burial place of the great conqueror Timur (Tamerlane) and several of his descendants. It was built between 1403 and 1404. Gur-e Amir, meaning “Tomb of the Emir,” is a masterpiece of Timurid architecture. It houses the graves of Timur, his son Shahrukh, grandson Ulugh Beg, and other close relatives. The mausoleum is renowned for its fluted turquoise dome, intricate tilework, and marble tombstones. It influenced later Mughal architecture in India, including Humayun’s Tomb and the Taj Mahal.
