Makhambet Academic Kazakh Drama Theatre

The Makhambet Academic Kazakh Drama Theatre in Atyrau is one of Kazakhstan’s oldest theatrical institutions, founded in 1938. The theatre was established by graduates of a one-year drama studio at the “Neftyanik” club in Guriyev (now Atyrau). Its first curtain opened with Mukhtar Auezov’s play “Night Melody.” During World War II, while male actors went to the front, female performers kept the theatre alive. In 1948, it merged with the Oral Musical Comedy Theatre to become a regional institution. Today, it continues to thrive with a repertoire of classical and contemporary productions, serving as a cultural beacon in western Kazakhstan.
