Ascension Cathedral
The Ascension Cathedral is a wooden Orthodox church located in Almaty’s Panfilov Park. It is one of the tallest wooden buildings in Kazakhstan. Constructed between 1903 and 1907, the cathedral was designed by architect A.P. Zenkov. It stands 56 meters tall and was built entirely of wood without nails — a remarkable engineering feat. The interior was decorated by artist Nikolai Khludov. During the Soviet era, it served as a museum, and religious services resumed in the 1990s. Today, it is protected as a monument of national historical and cultural significance.
